History

Pontiac Lodge No. 21 began with a request for Dispensation by several members of the former Oakland Lodge No. 3 in September of 1847.   Oakland Lodge had lost it's Charter in June of 1847 and several members, determined to keep Masonry alive in Pontiac, sent a request to the Grand Lodge to start a new Lodge in Pontiac.

The Grand Lodge of Michigan granted a charter to Pontiac Lodge No. 21 in January of 1848 and the Lodge has been in continuous existence since that time.  In the early days, the Lodge rented meeting rooms above downtown storefronts, but in 1926, they made the decision to build a purpose built Masonic Temple in downtown Pontiac.  Construction was completed on the magnificent Temple located at 1 Lafayette St. in 1929 and the Lodge met there until the mid 1940s.  They moved to a more affordable location at 18 1/2 E. Lawrence St. in Pontiac until an opportunity arose to purchase back their original building at 1 Lafayette St in 1976.  The building was renovated and the Lodge met in the Lafayette St. Temple until 1986, when they moved to their current location.  The 1 Lafayette St. building has since been renovated into one of the premier wedding and banquet facilities in the county.

Many prominent men throughout the history of Pontiac and Oakland County have been members of Pontiac Lodge No. 21 and we are proud to be one of the oldest organizations in the County with our earliest roots dating to the founding of Masonry in Oakland County in 1822.
